In most places fall means pulling out sweaters. In Phoenix it means opening the windows for the first time since May. That first cool morning is the perfect moment to reset the house after a long summer indoors.
Here is the weekend plan we use, zone by zone.
Saturday morning: the bedroom
Summer sheets work hard. Wash everything, then rotate in a set of breathable cotton sheets that stay comfortable on warm October nights. If your pillow has gone flat, now is a good time for a memory foam pillow. On cooler nights in December, a weighted blanket is the cozy upgrade everyone ends up borrowing.
Saturday afternoon: the safety walk
Heaters come out soon, so walk the house with a short checklist:
- Press the test button on every smoke alarm.
- Check the gauge on the kitchen fire extinguisher and make sure everyone knows where it is.
- Hang a fire blanket near the stove for grease fires.
- Keep space heaters three feet from curtains, beds and sofas.
Sunday: small upgrades
Swap one tired thing for something better. A new bamboo cutting board, a few float frames for summer photos, or a door and window alarm for the sliding door you'll now leave open more often.
By Sunday evening the house feels new, the windows are open, and you're ready for the best eight months of the Phoenix year.
